Sustainable Big Bend

Sustainable Big Bend is a not-for-profit organization created to provide services geared toward networking, education, sharing, outreach, and building community with regard to various aspects of sustainable living. The goal of Sustainable Big Bend is to become a catalyst for change and an incubator for alternative, progressive and most importantly practical sustainable living solutions. Sustainable Big Bend has created three programs to promote a more sustainable future for residents of the Big Bend; the Regional Green Marketplace, the Green Living and Energy Expo, the Green Living Center, and the Local Food Network.

KCCI: Tallahassee

KCCI: Tallahassee is one of the most cutting edge community development projects in the world. The Knight Creative Communities Initiative (KCCI), a joint venture of The Knight Foundation and Richard Florida’s Creative Class Strategies Team, is a year-long program designed for local residents to build authentic sustainable regional prosperity in Tallahassee In 2007, Tallahassee was selected as one of three regions in the nation to participate in this project. KCCI chose Tallahasee primarily due to its high concentration of jobs in government and education and its consistent inability to attract and retain members of the creative sector. KCCI: Tallahassee community volunteers strive to educate, engage and empower other area residents to assist in helping each initiative achieve success.

Sustainable Tallahassee

Sustainable Tallahassee Inc. is a local resource dedicated to creating a sustainable community through public education and economic development. It’s web site offers information about why and how to live a sustainable lifestyle, tracking environmental issues in local and state government, links to local environmental groups, and a community calendar open to all organizations holding events or forms on issues related to sustainability.

Damayan Garden Project

Damayan is a small non-profit made up of gardeners, educators, and entrepreneurs in Tallahassee who want to enhance the quality of life in our community by teaching people how to grow their own food. The Damayan Garden Project currently has three different garden programs to fulfill this goal: family gardens, edible schoolyards, and community gardens. By planting gardens and teaching others to tend them without using chemical pesticides or fertilizers, Damayan enables pragmatic change toward a sustainable future.

Commuter Services of North Florida

Commuter Services of North Florida is a regional commuter assistance program funded by the Florida Department of Transportation District 3 Office. Their mission is to improve mobility for work and student commuters through the use of transportation demand management strategies such as carpooling, vanpooling, public transit, biking, walking, telework, and flexible work scheduling. Such options broaden transportation choices for commuters, facilitate individual cost savings, reduce fuel consumption, and mitigate both air pollution and traffic congestion.

 

 

Florida State University’s Sustainable Campus and Community Committee Program

The FSU Sustainable Campus & Community Committee (SC&CC) began back in 2004 as the FSU Recycling Committee that addressed the growing need of recycling on campus. By partnering with Tri-Eagle sales and Keep Tallahassee-Leon County Beautiful, the Garnet & Gold Goes Green! Recycling Program was born to facilitate recycling at FSU sporting events. The conversations about recycling grew into additional discussions about energy and waste management, green building, facilities operations, and alternative transportation. Today the FSU Sustainable Campus & Community Committee –made up of over 150 FSU faculty, staff, students, and community members—works together to develop projects and programs that enhance campus sustainability.

Keep Tallahassee-Leon County Beautiful

Keep Tallahassee-Leon County Beautiful is a non-profit organization committed to keeping our community beautiful. This organization is a volunteer-based organization that takes personal responsibility toward Tallahassee's and Leon County's environment. KTLCB is dedicated to keeping our community litter-free and educated about recycling, solid waste, and our environment.

National Level Organizations

The American Planning Association

APA is a nonprofit public interest and research organization committed to urban, suburban, regional, and rural planning. APA and its professional institute, the American Institute of Certified Planners, advance the art and science of planning to meet the needs of people and society.

The Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program

The Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program provides decision makers with cutting-edge research and policy ideas for improving the health and prosperity of cities and metropolitan areas. Their work is designed to help metropolitan areas (and the cities and suburbs within them) achieve three goals that are central for success in the new global order; growth in robust ways by embracing an innovative, productive economy that builds on the distinct strengths of individual places, growth in inclusive ways by fostering a strong middle class and reducing racial and ethnic disparities in education, income and wealth, and growth in sustainable ways by strengthening cities and older communities, and promoting energy-efficient and environmentally sensitive patterns of development.

Urban Land Institute

The Urban Land Institute represents the entire spectrum of land use and real estate development disciplines, working in private enterprise and public service.
ULI facilitates the open exchange of ideas, information and experience among local, national and international industry leaders and policy makers dedicated to creating better places. The mission of the Urban Land Institute is to provide leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide.

Congress for the New Urbanism

The Congress for the New Urbanism is the leading organization promoting walkable, neighborhood-based development as an alternative to sprawl. CNU takes a proactive, multi-disciplinary approach to restoring our communities. Members are the life of the organization – they are the planners, developers, architects, engineers, public officials, investors, and community activists who create and influence our built environment, transforming growth patterns from the inside out. Whether it's bringing restorative plans to hurricane-battered communities in the Gulf Coast, turning dying malls into vibrant mixed-use neighborhoods, or reconnecting isolated public housing projects to the surrounding fabric, new urbanists are providing leadership in community building.

The We Campaign

The We Campaign is a project of The Alliance for Climate Protection -- a nonprofit, nonpartisan effort founded by Nobel laureate and former Vice President Al Gore. Their ultimate aim is to halt global warming. Specifically the We Campaign is educating people in the US and around the world that the climate crisis is both urgent and solvable.

The Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association

The Florida Chapter of APA provides statewide leadership in the development of sustainable communities by advocating excellence in planning, providing professional development for its members, and working to protect and enhance the natural and built environments.

The Florida Capitol Region Chapter of the United States Green Building Council

The USGBC Florida Capitol Region Chapter strives to create a positive impact on the region's built environment by accelerating the adoption of green building practices, technologies, policies, and standards. This organization endeavors to move the green building industry forward with market-based solutions in the Tallahassee area. The Chapter's membership is open and balanced and will be comprised of leaders and visionaries from all segments of the building industry, including product manufacturers, environmental organizations, building owners, building professionals, utilities, city government, research institutions, professional societies and universities.
